Local Market Research

We rank local businesses across the US and Canada, and anywhere local search matters. These are research deep-dives on a few markets we know especially well, examples of how we read a market before we touch a campaign, not the limit of where we work.

How we read a local market

A keyword tool will tell you that "plumber" gets searched a certain number of times a month in a city. It won't tell you that half those searches go to the map pack, that locals abbreviate the city name, that one suburb searches differently than the core, or that an old neighborhood name still pulls volume. Local search is full of that texture, and it's where campaigns are won or lost.

So before we target a market, we research how people there actually search. We pull real volume for the service-plus-location combinations that matter, map the intent behind them, and look at who already owns the map pack and the first page. Then we build the plan around the gaps. The local SEO guide covers the mechanics; these market write-ups cover the local quirks.

A few markets we know especially well

We run campaigns across the US and Canada, and the approach below applies to any market. The write-ups span both countries. The Canadian ones, Halifax, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Vancouver, are home markets we speak to from firsthand experience. The US ones are data-driven reads on metros across the northern half of the country, from Grand Rapids and Cleveland to Kansas City and Pittsburgh, with more being added. The same method is what we apply to the industries we serve wherever a business is trying to get found, whatever city it's in.
